This right-hand page comes from the German World Chronicle (Weltchronik) (ca. 1400-1410), a history of events that begins with the Biblical account of Creation. The miniature above, one of 380, includes vivid colors and sweeping brushstrokes. It depicts the first rainfall that occurred after the seven days of Creation as described in the Old Testament Book of Genesis. Raindrops fall heavily from thunderous white clouds onto mountains, watering the verdant plain in the composition's foreground.
