October 24, 1607, Leiden
Perhaps now best known as a contemporary of - and overshadowed by - Rembrandt (the two young artists painted portraits of one another, and may have shared a Leiden studio), Lievens was highly in demand in his day as a portraitist and engraver. Influenced early on by his master, Pieter Lastman, Lievens adopted the Flemish "International" style - a la Anthony van Dyck, whom Lievens met and admired - sometime after 1628. His later years were spent painting commissions and engraving in Amsterdam.
