Modern Art

Funny, as the world got "smaller" (became more interconnected), styles and types of art grew exponentially. Here we move through Art History, from the time that the Impressionists moved on to bigger and better things, to the happenings of the 1960s.

Outline of Art History - Modern Art
A chronological outline of the different movements in art from 1880 to the present.

NGA - Post Impressionism
The US National Gallery of Art brings us this online exhibit of the group of artists who were conveniently labeled "Post Impressionists", as well as an overview of this "movement". The thumbnail images each come with information and an interpretation.

Art Nouveau World Wide Server
Nice site devoted to all things Art Nouveau which, admittedly, is not an easy topic to find resources for. Besides several artists and some lovely photos of doors, the author has researched and listed sites around the globe where examples of Art Nouveau can be viewed.

Web Museum: Fauvism
An article which outlines the influences and outcomes of this short-lived movement. Links to individual artists' works are contained within the text.

Futurism: Manifestos and Other Resources
Complete transcripts of every manifesto written by the Futurists (a wordy bunch), some with alternative translations. Scroll down the page for links to individual artists, images and anything else online related to Futurism.

DaDa Online
The place to go for DaDa art, artists, poems, prose and texts, an attempted definition of Dadaism and links to other Nihilistic places on the web.

History of Surrealism
Monica Sanchez has put together a lot of information on her site. Not only does she thoroughly cover the history of Surrealism, she also delves into its psychoanalytical aspects, covers research on Surrealism and offers a bibliography (if you're not sated at this point).

Abstract Expressionism
Mark Harden's most excellent Artchive comes through once again. Here he has written a short piece on this post-war (WWII) American movement, complete with links to its artists and an annotated bibliography for further exploration. Nicely done.

Artchive - Pop Art
Pop Art: What is was and those who created it. Links to artists included.
