Movements: Impressionism

Impressionism got its start in 1863 at le Salon des Refusés, although the term "Impressionism" wasn't coined until 1874 (by a critic, ridiculing the movement). The principle Impressionist painters, a small group, were French. The movement faded and made a transition to Post-impressionism by 1886, but its influence on art was both major and lasting.
Impressionism 101
Words alone cannot convey the singular influence Impressionism had on All Things Art afterwards. We can, however, look at the artists who developed it, their influences, those Modern artists who were influenced by Impressionism, facts and fictions, chronology, some excellent bibliographic resources and a bit of contemporary scuttlebutt from the mouths of those involved.

Click on "Experience Impressionism" for a guided tour of the period and that which defines the style. The tour itself is in a sort of comic-book format, and is geared toward younger viewers. The images of the paintings are all good, though, and the information is, due to its intended audience, easily understood.

The Impressionists
Courtesy of A&E's Biography Channel, the emphasis here is on - can you guess? - biographies of the artists. Five major and four minor names are covered, complete with interactive tours of their paintings. Teaching resources are here, too, as well as a super groovy section called "Paint Your Own Masterpiece" (it's fun!).
