More than 70 decorative objects, frescoes and stucco panels describe the large vacation residences of Rome's richest ruling families south of Pompeii in the Toledo Museum of Art's special exhibition In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite. Preserved by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., many of the painted scenes illustrate stories from classical mythology and the deities in them. Two large marble urns and pieces of glassware help to describe the lifestyle of the Roman imperial aristocracy.
