The Conversation Piece: Scenes of Fashionable Life spotlights the original meaning of the phrase "conversation piece" (a specific type of genre painting in which the upper echelons of society engage in high-class activities). In this exhibition, 36 conversation pieces from the Royal Collection, London depict over 200 years of fashionable royals and nobles dating from the reigns of Charles I to Victoria. Artists represented include Pieter de Hooch, William Hogarth, Johan Zoffany, Thomas Gainsborough, George Stubbs and Sir Edwin Landseer among others.
The Conversation Piece: Scenes of Fashionable Life will be shown at two venues: The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse (March 27-September 20, 2009) and The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace (October 30, 2009-February 14, 2010). Many thanks to the Royal Collection for providing an enjoyable and educational sampling for us in this image gallery.
