The Brooklyn Museum's 8300 sq. ft. Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art opened on March 23, 2007 with The Dinner Party (1974-79) by American Installation artist Judy Chicago (b. 1939) as its permanent centerpiece. Chicago's monumental work in mixed media, showcased in a gallery theatrically lit, is composed of three tables arranged in a triangle. As a whole, the work's 39 place settings pay tribute to the achievements of famous women in history (chosen by the artist) while seeking to memorialize their individual contributions to Western civilization.
"The Dinner Party" is on view at the Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY 11238-6052 (718-638-5000; Website). The museum is open Sunday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Wednesday to Friday 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Suggested admission is $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for seniors and students with valid identification card. Children under 12 years of age and accompanied by an adult are admitted for free.
