About the show:
Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1724-1780) is the first major retrospective devoted to this artist in more than 80 years. It is also the result of many years of new research on Saint-Aubin, and a collaborative first for two institutions in the U.S. and France. On view are some 25 works including paintings and fifty small-scale drawings with touches of "wet" media (ink, and occasional washes or gouache). The latter are highly elaborate and detailed little vignettes of Parisian life during the French Enlightenment, done with a deft and casual hand by an artist whose output has spent far too much time on an art-historic shelf. Kudos are due to the curatorial team that dusted them--and the delightful Monsieur Saint-Aubin--off for our viewing enjoyment.
