Michelangelo: The Man and the Myth explores the career, personality and appearance of Renaissance Master Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), around whom a fabulous mythology began to be constructed even during his lifetime. He was a wealthy man who lived like a bum, a sculptor frequently tapped to do everything but, a curmudgeon who wrote love poems and songs, and an ugly human who became handsome over the centuries in other artists' portraits of him. This exhibition--comprised of over a dozen of his original drawings and writings, along with contemporary artists' portraits of Michelangelo--attempts to give us a glimpse into the true nature of the man.
Michelangelo: The Man and the Myth was organized by the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, Italy, in association with The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University. The show is on view at the SUArt Galleries, Syracuse University campus (August 12-October 19, 2008) and the Palitz Gallery (November 4, 2008-January 4, 2009).
