Jan Lievens: A Dutch Master Rediscovered

Traveling October 26, 2008-August 9, 2009 to Three Venues

From Shelley Esaak, About.com

The retrospective exhibition Jan Lievens: A Dutch Master Rediscovered at long last attempts to give the artist his due. Lievens, a child prodigy whose career began before that of his fellow Leidener, pupil of Pieter Lastman and competitor/friend Rembrandt, has long been eclipsed in the annals of art history by the latter. While the reasons for this discrepancy are both fairly unclear and clearly unfair, over 110 of the artist's finest works (including 50 paintings, 28 drawings, and 34 prints) presented in this show go a long way towards re-establishing the reputation Lievens enjoyed during his lifetime.

Jan Lievens: A Dutch Master Rediscovered was organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (on view October 26, 2008-January 11, 2009), in association with the Milwaukee Art Museum (February 7-April 26, 2009) and the Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam (May 17-August 9, 2009).
