Better known as an Abstract Expressionist painter, Philip Guston (1913-1980) once said, "It is the bareness of drawing that I like. The act of drawing is what locates, suggests, discovers." Philip Guston: Works on Paper is the first retrospective of his drawings in twenty years, and offers abundant proof that the artist put those words to practice; indeed, there were periods during his long career when he stopped painting altogether to concentrate on his draftsmanship.
Philip Guston: Works on Paper was organized by the KunstMuseum in Bonn, where it opened in March 2007 (on view March 1-May 20, 2007) and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich (December 13, 2007-March 2, 2008). Additional venues included the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark (May 31-August 26, 2007) and the Albertina, Vienna, Austria (September 7-November 25, 2007). The Morgan Library and Museum (May 2-August 31, 2008) was the exhibition's only North American stop.
