Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889

Traveling October 4, 2009-June 6, 2010 to Cleveland and Amsterdam

By , About.com Guide

The exhibition Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889 focuses on the single year of Gauguin's career in which he went into full-blown Modernism (and remained there). How do we know 1889 was the year? It then that Gauguin, refused entry into the academic exhibition at Paris' Exposition Universelle, decided to stage an avant-garde exhibition at Monsieur Volpini's nearby Café des Arts for his own and a few friends' (namely: Louis Anquetin, Émile Bernard, Charles Laval and Émile Schuffenecker) works. Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889 recreates the Volpini show's paintings, carvings, ceramics and works on paper, and also reunites the only hand-colored set of Gauguin's eleven Volpini Suite zincograph prints.

Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889 is on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art October 4, 2009-January 18, 2010. It will then travel to the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (on view February 19-June 6, 2010), under the title Paul Gauguin: The Breakthrough Into Modernity.
