What was the secret to Lucas Cranach the Elder's success? This comprehensive exhibition, organized by the Städel Museum, offers over 100 authenticated works by the German master in an attempt to answer the question. Cranach the Elder surveys six decades of the artist's work, illustrating his versatile ability to jump from mythology, to parody, to altarpieces, to some of the most iconic portraits to came out of the Reformation. And therein, dear friend, lies his successful secret: Lucas Cranach I never met a commission he didn't like, nor did he ever fail to please his diverse sources of patronage. Take a peek -- you'll see what I mean.

Cranach the Elder is on view at the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, from November 23, 2007-February 17, 2008. It is scheduled to appear at the Royal Academy of Arts, London from March 12-June 8, 2008.
