Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea

Traveling June 29, 2008-July 5, 2009 to Three Venues

From , former About.com Guide

Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea illustrates the artist's particular interest in water, both in his art and his pursuit of water sports--the latter of which eventually led him to design and build his own sailboats. Through paintings, drawings, photographs and models of his boats the exhibition leads us from Paris, to Caillebotte family estates in Yerres and Petit Gennevilliers, to then-new vacation hot spots on the Normandy coast. Many of the canvases are being lent from private collections, so Gustave Caillebotte... offers a rare (and probably unique) viewing opportunity for fans of this key figure in Impressionism.

Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea was organized by Ordrupgaard, Copenhagen (on view June 29-October 5, 2008), and the Kunsthalle Bremen (October 22, 2008-February 22, 2009). Its viewing at the Brooklyn Museum (March 27-July 5, 2009) is the exhibition's third, final and only North American stop.
