Painter Todd Stone's Witness || Downtown Rising series is the result of 10 years' effort that began on September 11, 2001, as he watched the World Trade Center towers burn and collapse from his Tribeca window. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Stone put his work on display at his temporary studio space on the 48th floor of the rebuilt 7 WTC -- a space that gives him a bird's eye view of the of the construction taking place at Ground Zero.
Though we have chosen to share a selection of works here that concentrate on the day of the attacks, Todd Stone's Witness || Downtown Rising series also chronicles rescue efforts, the massive clean up, subsequent memorial services and, importantly, the ongoing rebuilding of the WTC complex, including the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum (built around the original Twin Towers' footprints) and the 1,776-foot 1 World Trade Center. We look forward to seeing the completion of Witness || Downtown Rising in 2015 when the WTC is scheduled to be complete.
