Color Chart: Reinventing Color 1950 to Today was so wittily titled for two reasons. First, and as every past or present art student well knows, making a color chart is a mainstay of coursework. And, secondly, working artists began to seriously embrace the concept of premixed, commercial-grade (think: house and automobile) paints in cans in the mid-20th century. As a result, Color Chart was a visual feast of some 90 works of art--including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, digital art, videos and films--by 44 artists. The exhibition also included several site-specific installations and commissions.
Color Chart: Reinventing Color 1950 to Today was on view at The Museum of Modern Art, New York from March 2 through May 12, 2008 and did not travel. However, MoMA has thoughtfully provided both a website dedicated to the exhibition and a selection of images for our image gallery, as seen here. Enjoy!
