The exhibition 1812: A Nation Emerges reminds us that if the telegraph had been developed just a bit faster, we probably wouldn't be talking about this United States-British Empire-Native American-land-sea series of battles on and around the Eastern seaboard-Great Lakes-Mississippi River. But then, we also wouldn't be singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" or looking at unsmiling Uncle Sam looking back at us.
1812: A Nation Emerges tells the story of the war through objects and portraits of the major figures involved: Presidents, politicians, military officials from the US and England, Native American leaders, women, slaves, and more. It is on view at the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. from June 15, 2012 to January 27, 2013.
