Artists in 60 Seconds: Francisco de Zurbarán

By Shelley Esaak, About.com

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Baroque

Date and Place of Birth:

November 7, 1598, Fuente de Cantos, Badajoz Province, Spain

Life:

Francisco de Zurbarán, of Basque origin, is yet another of those artists whose works were relatively unknown (in this case, outside of his native Spain) until recent times...which has made his collectors happy collectors, indeed. He worked in oils and was clearly, at some point, acquainted with the works of Michelangelo. Zurbarán is best known for his religious themes, though he also painted still-lifes and, for a few years, court portraits in Madrid.

Important Works:

  • The Apostle St. Andrew, 1631
  • Still Life with Oranges, Lemons and Rose, 1633
  • Rest on the Flight to Egypt, 1659
  • St. Francis, ca. 1660

Date and Place of Death:

August 27, 1664, Madrid, Spain
