Artists in 60 Seconds: Jan Baptist Xavery

By Shelley Esaak, About.com

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

(late) Baroque > Neo-Classicism

Date and Place of Birth:

March 30, 1697, Antwerp

Not only is his surname alternately spelled as either "Xavery", "Savery" or "Saveri", his given names can be "Jan Baptist", "Jan-Baptist", "John Baptist" and "Johann Baptist". (By my count, there are at least 12 different web searches right there...)

Life:

Xavery, son of the sculptor Albertus Xavery (1664-1728), was Flemish but, after his training in Antwerp, had to hit the road to find work. After traveling to Vienna, and through Italy, he wound up in the Northern Netherlands (where the commissions were, at the time). Happily, he landed a plum position as Court Sculptor to Prince William IV of Orange Nassau. Though best known for his portrait sculptures in terracotta, ivory and marble, he was also a member of the painters' guild in The Hague.

Important Works:

  • Balthasar Denner, date unknown
  • Prince William IV, 1733
  • Allegory of Faith, 1735
  • Apollo and the Cumaean Sibylla, 1742

Date and Place of Death:

July 19, 1742, The Hague
