Date and Place of Birth:

December 21, 1401, San Giovanni Val d’Arno

Life and Work:

Masaccio is best known for rendering humans with accurate human proportions, a technique which was lost during the Middle Ages. The best example of this can be seen in his painting Expulsion from the Garden of Eden (1427).

Important Works:

  • Trinity, ca. 1425–7, fresco, S Maria Novella, Florence
  • The Brancacci Chapel frescoes, ca. 1424-7, S Maria del Carmine, Florence

Date and Place of Death:

Prior to late June of 1428, in Rome.

Masaccio was documented as being in Rome in spring of 1428, where he was collaborating on the S Maria Maggiore Altarpiece with Masolino. News of his death reached Florence by late June that same year.
