Northern Renaissance
1497 or 98, Augsburg, Bavaria
As the son of a master painter, Holbein the Younger received early and thorough training as an artist. His earlier work (in Basel) consisted of mainly religious images. After 1528, he was strictly a portrait painter in London, where his careful attention to detail and use of color kept him in great demand.
- Portrait of Erasmus (1523)
- Madonna of the Burgomeister Meyer (1526)
- Sir Thomas More (1527)
- Portrait of Henry VIII (1540)
1543, London, England, of the Plague
