Artists in 60 Seconds: William Hogarth

By , About.com Guide

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Baroque > Rococo

Date and Place of Birth:

November 10, 1697, London, England

Life:

One gets the feeling, when viewing Hogarth's paintings and prints, that he lived his life with tongue firmly planted in cheek. He delighted in satirizing high society, often portraying fops and upstanding women in mythological allegories. He also pioneered artists' rights, securing a copyright Act in 1735. Small wonder he was in the midst of a feud at the time of his death. Although he is better known for his engravings, his paintings demonstrate a vibrant palette and masterful brushwork.

Important Works:

  • The Rake's Progress, 1733-35
  • The Shrimp Girl, 1740
  • Marriage a la Mode, 1743-45

Date and Place of Death:

October 26, 1764, Chiswick, England
