Artists in 60 Seconds: Giorgione da Castelfranco

By , About.com Guide

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Italian High Renaissance, Venetian School

Date and Place of Birth:

(unknown) 1477 or 1478, Castlefranco Veneto, Republic of Venice (in present-day Italy)

Life:

Giorgione, though he enjoyed only a brief life, had a profound impact on the Venetian School in general, and Titian in particular. Giorgione remains somewhat of a mystery - we haven't many personal details about him, and he didn't sign or date his work. However, he is rightfully credited with introducing the landscape as a "stand-alone" genre, as well as incorporating the female nude as a singular subject. That he also concentrated the luminous lighting of Venice into his work was a bonus.

Important Works:

  • Judith, 1504
  • The Three Philosophers, 1508
  • The Tempest, 1510
  • Sleeping Venus, 1510 (completed by Titian)

Date and Place of Death:

On or before November 6, 1510, Venice, Italy
