Artists in 60 Seconds: Caspar David Friedrich

By , About.com Guide

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Romanticism

Date and Place of Birth:

September 5, 1774, Greifswald

Life:

Friedrich, besides being a Romantic, was a pioneer of the symbolic landscape. He used trees, mist, mountains and the light of sunset (in particular) to symbolize Christian religious themes in a sort of mysterious mood. At the time, this represented a major break from traditional, representational Biblical scenes. He is remembered, too, for exclusively working from German land and seascapes and vividly conveying northern light.

Important Works:

  • Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, ca. 1818
  • Chalk Cliffs on Rügen, 1818-19
  • The Tree of Crows, 1822
  • Large Enclosure, ca. 1832

Date and Place of Death:

May 7, 1840, Dresden
