Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Influenced by the Ashcan School

Date and Place of Birth:

1892, Vienna, Austria

Life:

Leon Dolice, born in Austria, made his way to New York City in 1920 and took to his adopted home with a vengeance. Besides working in pastels, painting and color linocuts, he spent countless days sketching scenes of city life and landmarks and creating copperplate etchings (a technique which has largely fallen out of favor, due [one suspects] to the sheer labor involved). As a result, his body of work represents an enormous gift to anyone interested in scenes of a New York City which has largely disappeared.

Important Works:

  • Fulton Market (series), 1922
  • New York Skyline, 1930
  • East 34th Street, 1951
  • Third Avenue, 1951

Date and Place of Death:

1960, New York City
