Artists in 60 Seconds: Hippolyte 'Paul' Delaroche

By Shelley Esaak, About.com

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Academic

Date and Place of Birth:

July 17, 1797, Paris, France

Life:

Delaroche avoided the Neo-classicism vs. Realism "battle" of his day by painting in the French Academic style. He is best known for his historical works, many of which, curiously, dealt with famous British subjects. His smooth, highly finished style kept him flush with commissions and in great demand as a portrait artist.

Important Works:

  • Joas Saved by Josabeth, 1822
  • Joan of Arc in Prison, 1824
  • The Death of Queen Elizabeth, 1828
  • The Young Martyr, 1855

Date and Place of Death:

November 4, 1856, Paris, France
