Life and Work:

Willem de Kooning is best known for his large, vibrant, abstracted paintings. He also worked in sculpture. His Woman series in the early to mid 1950s made him famous. Although, in these, the human form was too representational for Abstract purists, most people ridiculed the figures as cartoon-like.
