Artists in 60 Seconds: Cecil Collins

By , About.com Guide

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Sometimes labeled as Neo-Romantic. Collins' original, mystical, visionary style was, and continues to be, often compared to that of William Blake. Collins himself cared little for labels or comparisons to others, however esteemed.

Date and Place of Birth:

March 23, 1908, Plymouth, Devon, England

Life:

After a brief fling with Surrealism during the 1930s, Collins distanced himself from the movement and became an original (if rather isolated) figure in the art world. Never an artist whose words failed him, Collins wrote about art extensively. He also taught drawing, was a popular lecturer, worked on religious commissions later in life and was awarded an MBE. Unfortunately, his greatest recognition has come after his death, aided by an enormous bequest of his work to the British government.

Important Works:

  • The Fall of Lucifer, 1933
  • The Cells of Night, 1934
  • The Sleeping Fool, 1943
  • The Vision of the Fool (essay), 1947
  • The Angel of the Flowing Light, 1968

Date and Place of Death:

June 4, 1989, London
