By Shelley Esaak, About.com

Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Pittura Metafisica > Surrealism

Date and Place of Birth:

July 10, 1888, Vólos, Greece

Life:

After (or, possibly, because of) a rough childhood, Giorgio de Chirico was drawn to the metaphysical works of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. This is turn led him to create the Pittura Metafisica ("metaphysical painting") movement, which had a membership of around two artists in its heyday. It (and de Chirico's early works) did, however, have an enormous impact on Surrealism years later - long after de Chirico had moved on to writing, sculpting and theater design (none of which was metaphysical).

Important Works:

  • Mystery and Melancholy of a Street, 1914
  • Metaphysical Interior with Biscuits, 1916
  • The Disturbing Muses, 1925
  • Archeologists, 1927

Date and Place of Death:

November 20, 1978, Rome
