Movement, Style, School or Type of Art:

Post-Impressionism

Date and Place of Birth:

January 19, 1839, Aix-en-Provence, France

Life:

Often called the Father of Modern Art, Cézanne continually developed as an artist. He limited his contact with fellow artists (notably the Impressionists) in order to pursue his own studies of form and color and developed a marvelous, unique style of painting. His preferred subject matter was either still life or landscape (which lent themselves more easily to color studies), although he occasionally rendered humans.

Cézanne's influence on painters who came after him is immeasurable.

Important Works:

  • Village Road, Auvers, ca. 1872-73
  • L'Estaque, ca. 1882-85
  • Card Players, ca. 1890-92
  • Woman with Coffee Pot, ca. 1890-95

Date and Place of Death:

October 22, 1906, Aix-en-Provence, France
