Neo-Classicism
Date and Place of Birth:
November 1, 1757, Possagno (near Treviso), Italy
Life:
Considered the preeminent sculptor of his day, Canova is best known for introducing the Neo-Classic style of sculpture to Italy (as well as reviving a trade many felt had been in decline). His precocious talent was such that, at the age of 25, he was commissioned for the tomb of Pope Clement XIV - a job which led to his being in high demand thereafter. Though he amassed great wealth, he, a kind bachelor raised in poverty, benevolently distributed his funds to struggling artists and the aged.
Important Works:
- Pauline Bonaparte as Venus ("Venus Vincitrice"), 1801-07
- Perseus with the Head of Medusa, 1804-06
- The Repentant Mary Magdalene, 1809
- The Three Graces, 1813-16
Date and Place of Death:
October 13, 1822, Venice, Italy
