Life:

Calder, who received a degree in engineering before studying art, got his start as a freelance sketch artist. In the 1930s he began experimenting with the sculptures he'd been making (circus animals of wire and wood), and introduced moving parts into the pieces. Thus the mobile was born. He also created large, stationary pieces which he called stabiles. Red is the predominate color used in his works.
