Check your local television listings for dates and times. Below is an episode synopsis. Rupert Smith's companion book by the same name is available for purchase through The British Museum.

Taking Care of the Past: Describes the work of the Museum's Conservation Department as its members restore a bronze statue of a youth and ancient Egyptian tomb paintings.

Bodies of Knowledge: Examines human remains such as the Lindow Man and Egyptian mummies in the Museum's collection and the institution's changing attitude regarding indigenous peoples.

The BM Goes East: A behind-the-scenes look at how Neil MacGregor, the Museum's Director, arranged this year's upcoming blockbuster special exhibition The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army. Also shows how huge wall reliefs from Art and Empire: Treasures from Assyria in the British Museum were transported to Shanghai, China.

Bursting at the Seams: A history of The British Museum building and its campus.

Putting on a Blockbuster: Curator Hugo Chapman describes the evolution of the BM's extremely successful Michelangelo Drawings show. Also examines the role of Visitor Services at the Museum.

Shopping for Posterity: How the Museum acquires new objects.

Curators of the Here and Now: Two members of the BM's curatorial staff work with contemporary artists.

Old Pots and Puzzles: How research related to objects in the Museum's collection is conducted, with specific reference to decoding the symbolic imagery on Nasca pottery and translating cuneiform tablets from Mesopotamia.

Things Aren't What They Seem: Determining forgeries and replicating two ancient Egyptian works.

Beyond Bloomsbury: Describes The BM's work within the community and throughout the United Kingdom with other institutions through the creation of an original artwork and a touring special exhibition.

(1) Robert A says:

My knowledge about Britain stayed mainly between Princess Diana, The Queen, Are You Being Served? and Keeping Up Appearances. How wonderful to learn that Britain also has a museum. Will have to have a spot of tea when this airs. What a wealth of knowledge for them to be proud of.
