Artists You Should Know: Alexander Archipenko
Wednesday March 31, 2004
A nice woman named Ada wrote saying that her favorite artist, Alexander Archipenko, was missing here. Now, there are many, many things in this world that one cannot do much about but, happily, this can certainly be fixed. I like Alexander, too, and just as much for his determination to live life in his own way, as for his work.
Archipenko was an innovative sculptor whose life saw him present at a lot of noteworthy events in modern art. Imagine living in Paris, as an artist, while Cubism was being born - and hanging out with all of those guys. Archipenko did, and swore he didn't follow Cubism, but added to it. You've heard of the famous 1913 Amory Show? Archipenko was an exhibitor. His wide circle of acquaintances included a lot of Famous Names in Art, and he never seemed to have a problem collaborating with them (this is always cheering to hear of in any artist). He established schools and left a foundation that, to this day, provides internships. Though he is best known as a sculptor, he also worked in ceramics, lithography and engineering. (It boggles the mind, the sheer energy some humans spread around the earth during their time, doesn't it?) Ada, thank you very much for a great suggestion, and I hope I have rectified matters.
