Patriot Acts in Sequential Art

Wednesday November 19, 2003
First, let me go on record as saying that comic and sequential art is art, and those who create it are artists. That is my opinion. We're all entitled to our own opinions, whether we concur or respectfully disagree. That said, there's a new article available online, courtesy of R.C. Baker, writing for The Village Voice. Alex Ross, a sequential artist rightfully famous in comic book circles, is promoting his latest book Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross , and Baker describes both it and a concise history of the comic book as a genre. This seems like a good time - given current political events - to mention Ross' 1997 comic Uncle Sam (available as a hardcover edition), which you may or may not have seen. The art and storyline of Uncle Sam bring to light some of the other "Patriot Acts" throughout US history that are almost guaranteed to be disturbing to readers, although for individual reasons. A person seeking examples of political art would do well to check Uncle Sam out. (Warning: The Village Voice, for those unfamiliar, is not averse to printing certain colloquialisms that some may find offensive.)
