October 11, 2003Dali + Disney = "Destino"A collaborative animated film, 57 years in the making, will make its US debut next weekend at the 41st New York Film Festival. It seems that the two artists met after WWII. Disney had respect for Salvador Dalí's work, and Dalí considered Walt Disney a fellow Surrealist (he must've seen Fantasia). The project between Dalí and the Disney Studios was quietly scrapped, in a financial move, when it seemed the short film (now winning rave reviews) couldn't possibly be sold. It would be nice to think that the Disney media empire decided to complete the project - which closely follows Dalí's original storyboards - in the spirit of honoring an obligation. It's also reported, however, that the organization finally realized that they didn't legally own around $100 million (US) worth of original Dalís, unless the film got made. |
