An Actual "Gallery Girl" Takes One for the Team

Casey Stranahan is a hero. Specifically, she is my hero for singlehandedly preventing me from committing the published equivalent of seppuku. How did it come to this? Please, allow me to explain.

You see, I sat through the premiere of Bravo's new reality television series "Gallery Girls." Not once, or twice, but three times because my mind was blown. It could not seem to process the fact that the doomed SS Gallery Girls failed to launch even one entertaining lifeboat. I didn't care what happened to the Girls, couldn't believe the unrealistic view of entry level gallery work, and should've seen some art. This is not one of those delicious shows one can love to hate -- it lacks even the minute amount of human or artistic interest required to inspire that. My time would have been better spent on more pleasurable activities, such as having a root canal without anesthesia or shooting myself through the hand with a pneumatic nail gun.

And believe it or not, the above paragraph is not that which I had originally written, the " ... published equivalent of seppuku." I couldn't publish that, because it was a full-blown, R-rated rant. Suffice to say I very much resent that "Gallery Girls" adds a steel-reinforced concrete wall to the stereotype that visual art professionals are the among the most indolent, self-absorbed, pretentious boobs on Planet Earth. The vast majority are not. They work with fine art and artists despite many factors because they are passionate about art. Not wealth, or social status, or self-importance, but ART.

So here is where Casey comes to the rescue. She has been a gallery "girl," and leads no one astray about the glamorous lifestyle, stupendous wages, skilled tasks, and minimal education a gallery Internship requires and offers. Additionally, she is bravely sitting through "Gallery Girls" in order to write witty, insightful synopses for those of us who would rather do something (anything!) else. Finally -- and I don't know how she does it, but -- she somehow makes this crashing, 42-minute bore seem humorous. Well done, Casey! Very well done, and thank you.
