Casting Calls Announced for The Untitled Art Project
Wednesday July 1, 2009
Tell all of your artist friends: the Bravo Network has, at long last, determined a casting call schedule for its upcoming reality television series The Untitled Art Project. According to the press release, they are looking for "emerging or mid-career" artists of the "contemporary" stripe. (Note to readers: Erm, not to split hairs, but any visual artist who is currently [1] breathing and [2] working is, by definition, "contemporary." But I digress.) The schedule is as follows:
All that's left to say is "Good luck" and that I, a dedicated shunner of Reality TV, will watch this series. Oh, I'd rather be in Hell with a broken back than to sit through, say, The Real Housewives of _______(insert place I don't care about here), but I would make popcorn and glue myself to the screen to watch a Conceptual artist try to etch a zinc plate. Now that's must-see TV, Fellow Art Geeks.

I know what you mean about watching reality TV (unless it’s associated with talent – like So You Think You Can Dance). Hopefully it won’t be up to the producers to select participants, because they’ll just pick the most irritating, hot-tempered, and self-important characters just to make the show more interesting.
Try as I might to figure out the attraction of reality TV, I don’t get it. Likely due to Val’s observation that the participants are “irritating, hot-tempered and self-important.” And, it doesn’t help that that’s exactly what the editing plays to. The beauty of “Art Project,” though, is that the world loves a flamboyant creative spirit. And, unlike “The Apprentice” (which is just annoying because our lives are filled with cleaning up after people who can’t do what they claim) it will be fun to watch creative people take on new challenges. I just hope we don’t have to put up with abusive judges. I’m in for watching it (at least the first few times).
