The Staff at About.com and I are pleased to announce an open call for a Contributing Writer on the topic of Modern Art. Here is the official position description:
"Contributing Writer
GuideSite: Art History
Subtopic: Modern Art
Qualifications:
About.com is looking for a professional writer with a thorough knowledge of modern art to write for our art history site: http://arthistory.about.com. The successful candidate should be willing and able to work in a collaborative environment with an editor and the current Art History Guide.
The contributing writer will need to be capable of expressing complicated concepts in simple, practical language, and write for a non-academic audience. Candidates should have previously published writing – either online or in print – and be proven experts on art history.
What to Cover:
Definitions and Explanations:
Create one page profiles of major artists from modern art. Please only cover artists that do not already have profiles in place. See this listing to see if an artist requires a profile: http://arthistory.about.com/library/artists/blnames_main.htm
Since this is a very visual topic, please make an effort to include images whenever possible.
Things to Avoid:
Please make sure not to duplicate content that’s already on the Art History site. Avoid using jargon, or any language that is intimidating to novices.
Of course, plagiarism and copyright violations are not tolerated."
Interested? To be considered, please email me. Tell me why you'd be a good fit--and big bonus points here for having read the site, being familiar with my unintimidating-yet-scholastically-sound style and trying to understand what us working collaboratively would mean. Important: Paste your resume or C/V into the body of the email. (Note: I will not open attachments. Why? Your email is coming directly to my personal computer, for which I am the entire Tech Support department. YOU try spending half of your work week cleaning trojans out of a system only to eventually have to wipe a drive, format and spend infinity reinstalling all of your programs, and you'll see exactly where I'm coming from.)
Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Update: Thank you for your overwhelming interest! We will not be taking any new C/Vs or resumes after March 6, 2009. Those of you who have already sent information can rest assured that we've got it on file, and you'll be hearing from me soon if you haven't already.
If, in the future, we find that more applications are desirable, it will be promptly announced here. And on a final, personal note, I am deeply humbled, gratified and impressed by those of you who responded with such enthusiasm. Asking for your letters of interest has been a moving revelation, and my appreciation over your answers to this call knows no bounds.

Comments
I am looking forward to having someone like this. I would apply myself, but I know my limits, and art-expert I am not.
Still. I do so enjoy reading and expanding my knowledge, as well as having these short bios and reviews.
I am very glad that about.com is expanding its art resources.
I’m glad about it, too, Starr. I work on the Art History website every single day, but there is only so much one person can do given the occasional needs for eating, sleeping, and interacting with one’s spouse and offspring.
Unfortunately, I did not see this posting until a week ago, and your deadline for applications, considering the amount of research and compilation of information, and transforming said information into intelligible text is an unreachable goal for me. I really hope you could extend it to say, Monday by midnight?
I’m sorry for your scheduling conflicts, but the March 6 deadline remains in place. Perhaps you could get it to me before midnight tonight?
Thanks for the reply, Shelley, even if I worked straight through to midnight, I wouldn’t be finished as the artist bios alone take a lot of time to write.
Oh! I see what you’re saying now. You don’t need to write anything; there are no writing samples required. I’m just asking for a cover letter with your C/V or resume inserted at this point. Can you send that today?
