Amy the Art Mom
Saturday October 25, 2008
Although I am now completely out of patience with the phrase "____(First Name) the ____(Occupation)," let's make room for one more version. It hasn't come up during campaign stump speeches, but it speaks for me and many of you.
Benjamin Krevolin, President of the Dutchess County Arts Council, wants the public to hear about Amy the Art Mom. As Krevolin writes, Amy is every parent who foots the bills for and shuttles the children to extracurricular art, music, dance and drama lessons because--and this is key--Amy knows that a youthful foundation in the arts makes for a well-rounded adult. I will boldly presume that Amy is also the legion of you wonderful parents I've met over the years who volunteer to bring art appreciation into classrooms lacking any sort of visual arts budget.
If you've ever wanted a concise list of why we champion arts education for our children, please give "Hockey Moms, Make Room for the Art Mom" a read. It's every bit as validating and "Pro-America" as apple pie and baseball.

Here! Here! As an art mom, I really do have to agree. It is a hard job, lacking glamor. Neither I nor any of the kids get big trophies or ribbons, but it is what is necessary for our children.
