Anne d'Harnoncourt Day of Appreciation June 19

Thursday June 12, 2008
The Philadelphia Museum of Art announced yesterday that Thursday, June 19, 2008 is being set aside to appreciate Director and CEO Anne d'Harnoncourt, who died last week at the age of 64.

According to the notice on the PMA website, the Museum will offer free admission all day (10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.). A complimentary podcast, Director's Delights, a personal "tour" of the Museum in which Miss d'Harnoncourt talks about some of her favorite pieces, is available from the Podcasts page (iTunes format only). The Philadelphia City Council "will issue a resolution honoring Anne d’Harnoncourt's extraordinary leadership and public service" at 11:30 a.m. At 6:00 p.m., when the Museum closes, a gathering is planned on the East Terrace and the Philadelphia Boys Choir will perform.

The Museum also has a number of guest books on site, where visitors can share their Anne d'Harnoncourt memories or, indeed, simply their signatures. The guest books concerned me--so many of us around the globe cannot be in Philadelphia on June 19, yet wish, too, to show our appreciation of this remarkable woman's impact on the visual art and museum worlds.

Happily, Senior Press Officer Elisabeth Flynn has assured me that the Museum's webmaster took this into consideration. We all have a virtual guest book in which to share our thoughts. Please help spread the word.

One final note: June 19 is a day of appreciation; Anne d'Harnoncourt's memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, September 7, 2008, which would have been her 65th birthday.
