Goya Glides into Guggenheim

Wednesday February 7, 2007

Guggenheim Museum and the Toledo Museum of Art announced that the Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) painting Children with a Cart (1778) will join the exhibition Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on February 16, 2007.

It's late to the blockbuster party, but odds are good this painting will generate a lot of buzz and additional viewers. You may recall that Children with a Cart was dramatically stolen and recovered, in short order, last November while en route from Ohio to New York City. After its return to the Toledo Art Museum, the painting was thoroughly inspected by curators and subsequently reinstalled, on January 11, 2007 so that a relieved public might welcome it safely home. After such a narrow escape, and while an FBI investigation into the painting’s theft is ongoing, it is indeed gracious of the TMA to allow Children with a Cart to go to the Guggenheim as had been hoped and planned. Late or not, it's a wonderful addition to the 21 other Goya works already on view in Spanish Painting.
