Andy Warhol: A Documentary Film about the Pop artist, directed by Ric Burns, will have its American theatrical debut on Friday, September 1, 2006 at New York's Film Forum. Narrated by Experimental artist Laurie Anderson (b. 1947), the voice of Andy Warhol (1928?-1987) is supplied by Conceptualist Jeff Koons (b. 1955). Written by James Sanders and Mr. Burns, the movie is produced by Donald Rosenfeld, Daniel Wolf and Burns. The movie's Executive Producers are Diane von Furstenberg, Peter Brant and Larry Gagosian.
This four-hour epic draws heavily on rare archival footage of the 1960s and 1970s, much of it shot by the controversial and eccentric Warhol himself. His brash style of art was influenced as much by advertising as it was by the eclectic combination of drug addicts, movie stars, prostitutes and protégés with whom he surrounded himself. Among the celebrities featured in the film are Salvador Dalí, Bob Dylan, Dennis Hopper and Susan Sontag.
Ric Burns' documentary will run from September 1 to 14, 2006 at Film Forum, 209 West Houston Street, New York, NY 10014 (Telephone: 212-727-8110; Website). Daily screenings will be at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, each one with a single 15-minute intermission in the middle of the movie.
For those unable to attend screenings at Film Forum, Andy Warhol: A Documentary Film will debut in PBS' highly acclaimed American Masters series on September 20, 2006. The film will be shown as two, two-hour episodes (9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, EDT) on two consecutive nights (September 20 and 21). Be sure to check the schedule of your local PBS station for applicable air times and dates.
