Special Exhibition Gallery: Great Painters in Brescia

Tuesday June 27, 2006

Image © Santa Guilia Museo della Cittą, Brescia; Used with permissionInteresting concept for an exhibition: pick a region in northern Italy that enjoys a rich artistic history, select a period of time that covers roughly three centuries, assemble 35 paintings (representing virtually every genre that occurred during the time period) from area museums and send them to Portland, Oregon for a very special show.

Great Painters in Brescia from the Renaissance to the 18th Century is on view from April 29 through September 17, 2006 at the Portland Art Museum. (The Portland Art Museum had lent three of its Impressionist paintings to Brescia for the 2005 exhibition Monet, the Seine and the Waterlilies, and is being returned the favor. Generously.) Portland is the exclusive North American stop for this exhibition, so don't hesitate to head that way if your interests include: Italian Renaissance portraits, frescoes, devotional paintings and altarpieces; 17th century decorative cycles and landscapes; or 18th century genre painting.

Stan Parchin and I, with the help of Portland Art Museum Public Relations Manager Beth Heinrich, have collaborated to offer you a small gallery of selected images from Great Painters in Brescia from the Renaissance to the 18th Century. We hope you enjoy them.

Stan Parchin and Shelley Esaak once again bring a wonderful gallery of great art to those who may not get a chance to see it in person.
Thankfully I live in New York City and can see most of these works of art.
But it is also wonderful to be able to travel to museums around the world from ones home computer. Much thanks and continue keeping us aware of all the great art work that is out there!

I just wanted to mention that I live in Portland, and the Brescia exhibit is very intriguing. If anyone is trying to decide to go or not, it is worth the trip if you aren’t too far away. The frescoes are especially interesting, and I think it is great that Shelly has taken the time to get the word out on this exhibit.
