Attention Kmart Shoppers

Tuesday June 20, 2006
That which is likely the most massive blue light special in Kmart history is currently taking place at Kmart's former corporate headquarters in Troy, Michigan. All of the contents of the one million square foot "Ft. Kresge," a landmark 1972 Metabolist (more organic in shape than geometric, offering "flexible" space in "clusters") construction, are up for grabs to the public at low, low prices.

Now, before anyone grumbles that he or she already has a perfectly adequate office credenza/phone switchboard/set of cafeteria heat lamps, that's not why I'm bringing this up. The point here is that nearly all of the corporate art collection is included in the liquidation sale, and we're not talking about sad-eyed clown portraits in oils on black velvet. Try, instead, authenticated Warhols, a Ming Dynasty watercolor and a rare Picasso tapestry. Those three examples will be going to the highest bidder, naturally, but there are over one thousand other original paintings, prints, sculptures and signed collectibles that can be snapped up on-site for a song.

This temporary art gallery will be open for six viewings per month, offering media in lots according to the following schedule: June, oils and watercolors; July, posters and prints; August, photography; and September, tapestry, sculptures and fine furniture. Check for scheduled hours by calling 800-613-6865 (US only) or 616-224-2500; driving directions are located near the end of the sale description.

Dear Shelley,

I wished that our KMart here that shares the same building with The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s merchandise warehouse had the same kind of sale.

God forbid that The Sara Lee Corporation should do the same thing. Now THEY have one fierce art collection. It was on tour in the United States more than three years ago.
The same goes for The Goya Corporation.

Dear Stan,

Oh, I hear you! Congrats on your local Kmart escaping the corporate chopping block, by the way. No small feat, that.

I’ll not be driving to Troy, as there’d be no hope of self control or anything remotely resembling fiscal responsibility. I’m already skating on thin ice with the Financial CEO in this house, what with the endless, ceaseless reference purchases. It’s almost like some Art History disease; you just can’t own enough books, most of them cost the earth, and new temptations are published quarterly.
