Special Exhibition Review: Samuel Palmer
Saturday March 25, 2006
Anne-Marie Jacobus, our intrepid London correspondent, had the pleasure of seeing Samuel Palmer: Vision and Landscape while it was at the British Museum, and has kindly written an exhibition review for those of you who have the opportunity to view this same show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Several works present in London were unable to travel, but the Met has six additional pieces that weren't previously included - sometimes these things work out quite even-handedly.) Anne-Marie points out that the chronology of the exhibition corresponds to different periods of Palmer's life, and she delves into biographical details that influenced his work in each.
Anne-Marie related in a closing sentence that Palmer has " ...been assigned to a cycle of neglect and rediscovery with each generation." This is true of many artists, most of whom have a cycle of more than one generation between rediscoveries. I am most pleased to be able to offer her review, and hope that, if you haven't yet made Samuel Palmer's acquaintance, you'll enjoy reading Ms. Jacobus' findings and viewing some of the artist's better-known works.
