Art History Poll: Was Dada Pessimism or Comedy?

Sunday December 4, 2005
Scan © Mark Harden/Artchive; Used with permissionA recent, thoughtful, articulate email came in requesting some information on Dada. Specifically, whether or not the Dadaists were anarchists ("Marilyn Manson") or absurd comedians ("Monty Python"). Well, after (1) feeling inordinately pleased over being asked an adult-type Art History question this week and (2) asking the children that live here what or whom Marilyn Manson might be, I have reluctantly passed up the chance to vote for a favorite television show of mine. Which gives you a good idea of my opinion on the motivations of the Dadaists - but where, I ask you, is the fun in my one little opinion? Fresh voices! That's what we need here. Go. Vote. The results are completely unscientific, but the election official (read: impartial hunk of server, somewhere) never discards any of the results, thus saving many of us the need to find one senator and one congressman to sign a formal objection.

In case you missed them on the first go-round, see all of the Art History Opinion Polls. Voting remains open for, well, ever.
