Image Gallery: 13 by Leonardo

Sunday October 9, 2005
Image source ArtprintCollection.com; Used with permissionHere we have a little walking (or, to be accurate, "clicking") tour of thirteen paintings by Leonardo. Eventually, I'll get around to filling in the skinny - background info, where Our Guy Leonardo was living when he painted thus-and-so and the always-indispensable gossip about the sitters - on all of the individual works. For today, coding 26 pages of HTML is enough. We must, indeed, take a small break and party like it's 1499 over the triumph of the pages miraculously appearing when clicked upon.

By the way, did you know that Leonardo really didn't paint all that many compositions? There aren't too many paintings of his that haven't been included here - and at least one of those included has a suspect attribution. (Oh, I can just see the emails now. "You lie, you _____ [insert derogative noun here, with or without preceding adjective]! I read in a Popular Novel that he had HUNDREDS of lucrative Vatican commissions!" Let me save us all some trouble: Leonardo had one Vatican commission. One.) Anyway, have fun, and enjoy the industrial-strength sizes of everything, links to which are at the bottom of each individual image's main page.
