Italian 'Shock Art' Ad Campaign
Sunday September 11, 2005
Subscribing to the tried-and-true "a picture is worth one thousand words" theory, the Italian non-profit foundation, CittaItalia, has embarked on an ad campaign to get citizens to cough up private funds towards the conservation of national cultural treasures. The ingenious ads will depict altered images of works by Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo (among others), all of which are currently "safe." The image of Michelangelo's David was rather disturbing; an appendage has gone missing (and, no, it's not the curlicue that immediately comes to mind ... well, to my aging juvenile delinquent mind, anyhow ... )
Big thanks to Nemy Gill, Classicist and About's Guide to Ancient History, for the news tip. I was pleased beyond reason that she took time out from working on her amazing site to think of me and mine. (Clarifying note: "Mine" meaning my beloved readers, not my "amazing site.") How generous!
