When Art Makes Us Go Berserk, Part ... I've Lost Track

Wednesday September 7, 2005
So, a woman walks into a museum - OK, stop me if you've heard this one - a woman walks into a museum, pulls a knife and proceeds to slash a painting. True story, yet again. A woman went ballistic in the Kunsthaus Bregenz (in Bregenz, Austria) last weekend on (dig this) a Lichtenstein canvas, slashing it four times with her knife. Apparently the culprit felt the $6 million Nudes in a Mirror to be a fake and, in a stroke of improvisational genius, also bit a restraining policeman on the leg. Now, I can almost see some works inciting madness, and I can almost see, maybe, biting the occasional artist on the leg (in a sort of desperate "cease and desist" effort), but a playful, cartoonish, Pop Art, what's-not-to-love Roy Lichtenstein? Honestly. Somebody's screaming for mood altering drugs, here.
